Unemployment hits 33-year low
|
Australia's labour market continues to tighten, sparking warnings from economists that this could trigger wages growth and heighten the prospect of another interest rate rise this year. The unemployment rate is at its lowest level since November 1974, following a monthly decrease of 0.1 per cent to 4.2 per cent in September, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The number of unemployed Australians decreased by 11,600 to 460,700 in September, while the number in work increased by 13,000 to 10,527,500. The jobs growth favoured part-time work. Full-time employment fell by 17,200 to 7,522,200 and part-time employment increased by 30,100 to 3,005,300. |
